The suffragists invented "voiceless speech," a form of stylized silence used to articulate their point of view while simultaneously dramatizing their experience of censorship. Drawing on her recent book, Mary Chapman explores the links between suffragist rhetorical manipulation of early 20th-century “new media” and 21st-century political self-expression through social media.
